This is a CT scan of a wind-up mechanical dog made mostly of plastic. The main spring of the driving mechanism is the donut-shaped red circle in the very center of the dog. An elegant girder-shaped lever rises from the gearbox to operate a cantilever that opens and closes the dog's mouth.
